The trick
The spiral twists itself.
Each ornament is a long strip worked with increases along one edge. The extra stitches have nowhere to go, so the strip curls into a helix on its own — no wire, no blocking, no stuffing. Add the character on top, hang a small bell at the bottom, and it's done.
That's why one takes an evening rather than a weekend, and why they use so little yarn: the whole bundle is a very good way to empty a scrap basket before Christmas.
